Sensitivity to gluten may cause suffering to those who are affected by it, but it sure has its upside. By strictly following a gluten-free diet, those who are sensitive to gluten are avoiding grains that can actually be harmful to the body.
According to some studies, the transition in our diets when our ancestors opted to become farmers instead of hunter-gatherer didn’t exactly have a positive effect on our health.
Some scientists concluded that grain-based diets can actually have bad effects such as increase in childhood mortality, reduce in stature, increased number of cases of bone problems, and over all shorter life spans.
Most of the people who suffer from gluten allergy or celiac disease have switched to alternative grains. It makes life so much easier, but some have claimed that just because it is easier doesn’t mean it’s better. Say, those who chose corn say it’s not necessarily all that better as there is a high incidence of obesity and diabetes for those who constantly consume this.
What exactly is the answer to this problem, you may ask. Totally avoiding grains can be difficult and impossible at times, but there are several means to say goodbye to gluten.
Instead of your usual grains, try an increased consumption of vegetables especially fresh vegetables. Eating meat and fish will also be good because of their high protein value, but you can still go for vegetarian-based protein like beans. Fruits are also a must in your diet.
When you do eat grain products, totally avoid processed foods. Whole grains are better than processed grains. Also, there are tons of gluten-free products today. All you have to do is check the label, or ask around if you’re not totally sure.
It’s hard to totally rid yourself of things that you used to love, but if it’s just gonna cause you intolerable suffering, then you’re better off without them.
