Celiac disease is an autoimmune digestive disease that damages the villi of the small intestine and interferes with absorption of nutrients from food. What does this mean?
Celiac disease is triggered by consumption of the protein called gluten, which is found in wheat, barley and rye.
When people with celiac disease eat foods containing gluten, their immune system responds by damaging the fingerlike villi of the small intestine. When the villi become damaged, the body is unable to absorb nutrients into the bloodstream, which can lead to malnourishment.

If your brother has “celiac disease” you should get tested for it, too. This condition seems to run in families. I was not diagnosised until age 67. Celiac disease is very serious in children … the only treatment is to avoid foods with gluten. Your parents should provide you with a list of things he can and can not eat…. They will have recieved a great deal of counselling and should share this information with you..
Back to you. For some unknown reason some people have the disease triggered early in life….or at birth… I think my trigger occurred when I had mono at age 17… I lived with it for a long time… but others are not so lucky. I think an Aunt probably died at age 55 of a cancer the type that is common to those who have celiac. Talk to your doctor all family memebers should be tested.
My sister and one of my children have been negative when tested… which is great …. but the rest of my family has become blaze about testing because of 2 negatives. In the general population about 1 in 200 people have this condition . If a family member has celiac the odd go up to 1 in 20 to 1in 25.
If your brother is just over for a short visit and you want to have safe snacks for him…. fresh fruit is a good option.
At a birthday party he could have ice cream…. plain vanilla ice cream… for some reason chocolate ice cream often has gluten.. none of those ice creams with cookies mixed in.
(No regular cake… no cones for the ice cream)
If you are serving a meal…. think mexican food with corn torillas and beans … mexican style rice. fresh tomatoes and greens… There are on line speciality shops that sell gluten free products at a PRICE I have found very few that I like.
MO-Del makes a gluten free animal cracker that is okay.
Bob’s Red Mills makes a gluten free pancake mix that is good for breakfast ( Oh that reminds me …children with celiac are told to avoid oats and oat gluten as well as wheat, rye and barley)
Do a search on your computer … Type in “gluten free”
to get additional information.
